Annie has sucked her fingers for a long, long time. We've been trying to discourage this habit over the past several months, limiting it to her room, finding other things for her hands to do (read a book in the car, hug a baby doll at nap-time). It was helping her to reduce the finger-sucking, but the dentist was wanting more. So we made a chart and picked out a prize--ballet clothes for Bitty Baby. Every day she didn't suck her fingers she earned a star and when her chart was full of stars she earned her prize. It worked better than I thought it would and the finger-sucking habit is mostly gone. When those fingers do start to creep to her mouth a reminder is usually all she needs. We've eliminated about 90% of the finger-sucking and that's good enough for this mama!
